How Do You Create a Resume with Google Docs?

Job seeker wearing glasses holds hands in the air, wondering how to make a resume in Google docs

Making a resume in Google Docs is easier than you think. You just need to know how to access pre-existing templates or upload your own!

If you want to use one of Google’s official Google Docs templates, there are two options to access them:

Three steps to find resume templates from Google Docs homepage
Two steps to find resume templates from Google Drive

Once you’re on the templates page, make sure you’re looking at the templates in the “Resumes” section. If you’re using a business account with Google, select the “General” tab at the top to be able to view templates.

Now you need to choose a resume template from these five options:

  • Swiss
  • Serif
  • Coral
  • Spearmint
  • Modern Writer

After you’ve chosen, don’t forget to save it! Make sure you title the resume with something like “First name—Last Name—Position—2025“. This makes it easy for you (and the hiring manager) to see your resume!

Now that you’ve chosen and saved your template, it’s time to customize it to fit your content. Here are some options for customization:

  • Change the heading font/color
  • Alter the spacing
  • Rearrange the columns
  • Adjust font size and type

When you have finished your resume, simply select the large blue “Share” button at the top right of the document. Before you input your employer’s email, change the permissions to “Anyone with the link” and “Viewer.” That way, no one can accidentally edit your document.

Should you use a Google Docs resume?

You’re probably wondering why we vouch for using Google Docs fillable resume templates. Here’s why:

  • ATS-friendliness and optimization – many free Google resume templates are ATS-friendly and optimized for those dreadful online screeners. In a nutshell, when you use a Google Doc resume template, your resume is readable and understandable by a screening bot before it’s passed to an actual human recruiter.

Why is that a good thing? Almost every potential employer uses ATS to screen and track applications, and you need to be sure that your template choice is compatible with such programs.

Using other design tools like Photoshop may allow you to add graphics like images and graphs. However, ATS doesn’t play nice with pictures and other decorations. At best, your resume will reach the employer’s trash bin.

On the other hand, Google Docs, like LibreOffice and Microsoft Word, is a word processor with the ability to export text-based ATS-readable document formats such as PDF. Thus, you’re sure that your application won’t face rejection because of the wrong resume design type.

  • All-round Accessibility – Like many of us, you may have searched through tens of files to find your latest resume copy. You no longer have to go through that.

This hassle is not the case if you incorporate Google Docs’ free resume templates to help you organize and identify your latest files. Google Docs resume formats allow you access to your files from anywhere—so you can edit, update, and send your resume on the go.

Want to access and edit your resume offline? Not a problem. Any of our resume templates for Google Docs are editable using a range of other word processors. Download your piece and save it in the text format you prefer, and you can edit it offline.

  • For all professions and experience levels – our Google resume templates are acceptable in all industries, from law, fintech, and academia, to aerospace, and for all experience levels from beginner, mid-level, and experienced to senior positions.

Therefore, choosing one of them means spending less time editing your resume and, instead, focusing more on applying for jobs with higher chances of getting hired.

Employers ranging from startups to giant corporations and job applicants with varying experiences prefer using these free resume templates for Google Docs because of the advantages that come with them.

Pick the Google Docs resume template that fits your profession, design, and experience, and start editing it now for free.

Do’s and don’ts for using a Google Docs template for resumes

To reap the maximum benefits of using free Google Docs resume templates, you must play by the rules below:

  • Customize, but don’t overdo it – while each of our resume templates for Google Docs is editable, you must tread cautiously when changing fonts, sections, and headings. To be confident you’ll pass the ATS, try to avoid too many graphics and wild fonts.

When you overly format any of our free Google Docs resume templates, you risk the wrath of online application screening bots. How and what are the consequences?

ATS looks for keywords and relevant skills in your resume that were in the job description. When you edit, there’s always the temptation of adding tables and images and using non-ATS-friendly font types. These graphics are difficult to read for bots and distracting for human recruiters.

  • Tailor your Google Doc resume template to the job description – Randomly search for a job title online. What do you get? Hundreds or more of job descriptions look the same at a glance. Looking deeper into each job ad, you’ll realize each lists unique responsibilities, skills, and requirements.

You must tailor your resume to a specific job. The job description has all the prerequisites for you to be a potential candidate. Yes, meeting the hiring manager’s expectations takes time, but you’re sure to get the best results.

Don’t worry about this because the BeamJobs resume checker does the heavy lifting, scoring your resume and providing a personalized review so you can implement feedback instantly with the help of AI.

  • Be consistent with formatting – your spacing, font sizes, types, and margins should be consistent throughout the document. You want your piece to be polished and professional.
  • Save and share in PDF – when you’re done editing your resume, save it and send it in PDF. This ensures that your original formatting isn’t lost when you send your application.
  • Don’t go beyond a page – unless you have extensive experience that would justify a second page, stick to a one-page resume.
  • Don’t ignore ATS compatibility – whether you like it or not, your application will be screened through ATS. Therefore, you can’t wish it away.

Tailor your resume to beat ATS at its game. Avoid graphics; do not use crazy font styles or graphics. The best you can do is bold, italicize, or underline to highlight your impactful bullet point sections.

  • Don’t provide unnecessary personal information – unless the job advert asks for it, don’t give unsolicited personal information. Your age, marital status, race, and photo have no place on your resume.

Upload your outside templates into Google Drive

If Google Docs templates aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, you may want to upload your own resume templates through Google Drive. This option is quick and easy if you don’t love any of Google’s templates.

2 ways to upload resumes templates to Google Drive

From here, you can jump to step three in the above section.

A word of warning, though: outside templates often don’t translate well into Google Docs, so you’ll likely need to adjust things until it looks just right. To spare you frustration, you can also upload your resume into our free resume builder tool to avoid the hassle altogether.

Be patient when working with your Google Docs resume template

Whenever you’re dealing with a template, it’s important to practice patience. Formatting your resume properly is essential, and you want to make sure your content is error-free, so take the time to thoroughly edit each section.

Start by deleting any filler text or the Lorem ipsum text that Google enters. Then choose appropriate fonts, colors, spacing, and font sizes. Just know, these templates can have inflexible layouts, so make sure your edits are appearing properly.

When you’re formatting your resume, don’t forget to keep the ATS in mind. The ATS (also known as an applicant tracking system) scans your resume to see if you fit the job requirements.

As with any computer, the ATS isn’t perfect, which means your resume needs to be formatted a certain way so it’s readable.

An ATS-friendly resume meets certain standards as explained below:

  • Body font type: Georgia, Cambria, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Calibri, Garamond
  • Header font size: 14–16
  • Body font size: 11–12
  • Margins: one-half to one-inch

It might seem like there’s little room for customization with the ATS, but we promise, you can do a lot with a little! You’ll see there’s a lot more you can do than you think.
